Less twangy than Holopaw, more catchy than Ugly Casanova, and louder than Pinback, Takka Takka nonetheless plays upon similar music themes: the blending of simple electronic sounds with acoustic strumming, the murmuring of soft male vocals, and vague but interesting lyrics. I’m trying to think of a word that sums this style, but I can only think of “somber-dude pop music.” If you can think of something more appropriate, please comment. Fortunately, Takka Takka is a bit more experimental (or rather, unpredictable) than the above groups, making this album an odd but engaging collection of songs perfect for lying on the floor and quietly listening.

An odd mix of elements pull at one another in this song. The pulsating beginning is slowly humanized by drum beats and then extinguished with plucked guitar sounds. Though suddenly sweet and soft, this song traverses back and forth between a rigid feeling (when the guitars drop out) and a drifting quality.

Though the first half of this song is not my favorite, I really love when the quiet orchestration is suddenly broken by a jangly guitar. The song becomes something completely different, though the layered vocals unite the two halves into something relatively coherent.

This album is definitely worth a listen, especially if you like “somber-dude pop music.” Check out the label site, the band site, and the band’s myspace. Oh, and buy the album.
